Blepharoplasty

WHAT IS IT?

Blepharoplasty is surgery performed on the eyelids to rejuvenate them. Normally it acts on the skin that tends to be left over from the upper eyelids over the years and/or the bags that appear on the lower eyelids due to stress, lack of sleep or age.

This operation can be associated with other techniques to enhance its results on the face, for example:

Eyebrow lift (which in some people droop over the years and worsens the amount of hanging skin on the upper eyelids). In this technique we raise the eyebrows if they have fallen over the eyes, giving our gaze an angry appearance, or we simply improve the curve that they acquire over the eyes to make them more attractive.

Surgery for eyelid ptosis (of the eyelid that falls over the entire eye, not just the skin). In this procedure we seek to lift the free edge of the eyelid so that “more eyes” can be seen and remove the tired appearance. You can take advantage of the wound made in the blepharoplasty or use another one on the inner side of the eyelid, which will not be seen.

Lipofilling of other areas of the face , which fills areas such as the cheek region to recover its plump appearance typical of youth. This technique consists of taking fat from other parts of the body, for example, the abdomen or flanks, but other parts also work, and transferring it using cannulas to the face. This way we manage to restore the volumes that are lost with age or intense exercise, always avoiding exaggerated or unnatural results.

The cervicofacial lift , which consists of elevating the tissues of the lower half of the face and neck to reposition them and once again present a more aesthetic angle between the jaw and the neck, resolving “square faces” or those with the appearance of an older person.

SURGERY SHEET

EVENINGAn overnight stay is not necessary unless it is associated with other surgeries such as a cervicofacial or frontal lift.
DURATIONBetween 1 and 2 hours depending on the complexity.
POSTOPERATIVEOn the day of surgery, rest with your head elevated and the area cold. Artificial tears, drops or ointments are prescribed depending on the surgery.
PAIN?It usually does not hurt, there may be itching in the eyes and a feeling of tightness. If there is pain, it is usually due to adjuvant treatments such as lipofilling or canthopexy.
SOCIAL LIFEIn a week, stitches are removed, in 2-3 weeks all the bruises have disappeared.

OBJECTIVES OF SURGERY

Achieve a rejuvenated appearance of the eyelids, in harmony with the rest of the facial features.

On the upper eyelid we try to remove the excess skin , avoiding excess removal to maintain good functionality and aesthetics. Likewise, we eliminate or transfer the fat that can bulge on both sides of the nose, in the most medial area of the eyelid. The scar is usually hidden in the crease that forms when we open our eyes, so that it is hidden with our eyes open. After a few weeks it is not visible with your eyes closed either.

In the lower eyelid we can improve bags in two ways: removing them or moving them towards the cheeks. In both cases it is made through an incision inside the eyelid, always with the eye protected, so that the scar will not be seen or noticed. This way we will achieve a smoother transition between the cheek and the eyelid, which is one of the features of youth.

FREQUENT RISKS

  • One of the most frequent complications is the appearance of edema (fluid in the tissues) or hematoma after surgery. This is favored by the thin skin of the eyelids. It usually resolves in a few days or weeks.
  • Recurrence of excess skin or bags : sometimes there may be a small asymmetry in the results that we can resolve after a few weeks.
  • Dry eyes : A sensation of dryness or foreign bodies may persist during the first weeks or months, especially in people who already have dry eyes. This complication is usually managed well with artificial tears.

PRE AND POSTOPERATIVE RECOMMENDATIONS

Eyelid surgery does not require special preparation . It is recommended to consult with the Anesthetist if you are taking antihypertensive or antiplatelet or anticoagulant medication. It is also not recommended to take herbal substances or dark leafy vegetables that can promote bleeding and the appearance of bruises after the operation.

In the postoperative period, a topical (in drops) and oral medication regimen must be followed, which will be attached. It is advisable not to do intense physical exercise or swimming the first week. You should not do contact sports either.

You can wash your face and head, read, use electronic devices such as mobile phones and computers, and returning to work can be relatively quick, between 5 and 7 days.
