Secondary surgery

There are many reasons why over time a patient who previously had breast augmentation surgery may require a new intervention, which is known as secondary surgery. These cases are usually more complex than a primary case, and therefore, it is even more important that they are carried out by qualified plastic surgeons.

Capsular contracture: Whenever we introduce a prosthesis into the body, it forms a capsule around it that isolates it. This healing process is normal and physiological. Some people, for reasons that are not entirely known, tend to react excessively to this prosthesis by forming an excess of capsule, which is known as capsular contracture. There are various degrees of severity. In milder cases you simply notice a greater hardness in one breast than the other, which is not too important and does not require treatment. In other more advanced cases, the capsule can deform the prosthesis or even cause pain. In these rare cases, the indicated treatment may range from taking specific medications to removing the prosthesis and the capsule, replacing it with another prosthesis.

Volume change: Over time you may wish to change the volume of your prostheses, either with the intention of increasing or decreasing size. Any option is possible and will require a new intervention in which the pocket will have to be expanded or reduced, and sometimes the excess skin will be adjusted.

Old age of the prostheses: Over time your prostheses may need to be replaced, either because they have broken and that break is diagnosed in a mammogram or at your request.

Need for mastopexy: With age the breast evolves, loses elasticity and tends to sag. The prostheses have a greater tendency to maintain their position over time but the gland may fall somewhat, occupying a lower position in the thorax. This may require a mastopexy (breast lift) to lift and rejuvenate your breast.
